Edward Smyth Jones (1881-1968) was born in Natchez, Mississippi to slave parents. In 1908 he brought out a book of poems under the pseudonym Invincible Ned entitled The Rose That Bloometh in My Heart (1908). His other works include: Souvenir Poems: Our Greater Louisville (1908) and The Sylvan Cabin: A Centenary Ode on the Birth of Lincoln, and Other Verse (1911). Some of his best-known poems are: A Song of Thanks, A Psalm of Love and Harvard Square.
