I watched as he arranged kindling and logs in the same fireplace that had warmed us Christmas Eve. It seemed that he was taking an inordinate amount of time to perform the task. Every splinter and twig had to be just right.
      "You do know we're going to burn that lovely little tower you're building, right?"   "If you make a fire properly, it will keep you warm all night," he said, unperturbed.
      "Not if we freeze to death first," I grumbled, pulling the blanket more tightly around me.
 
...     "Hush, little thief. We'll be warm soon enough." His voice was gruff, but I heard his smile in it. There was sadness too, but it had eased, as though some part of his burden had lifted.
      After a few more minutes of fine-tuning, Sadiq lit a piece of kindling and placed it at the heart of the pile. Soon the first flames appeared, small and uncertain at first, then brighter. Sadiq stood and stretched before joining me on the couch.
