“Leave your travel bag here. You can bring it in later,” Auntie Grace said to Ava. “Xu, where is yours?”

“No matter. Let’s go to the kitchen.”
Ava had smelled a faint aroma coming from the doorway, but in the kitchen the scent was powerful, a combination of black bean sauce, garlic, and at least one other flavour she couldn’t identify.
