At the time of original publication in 1886, Albert Harkness was an educator, born in 1822 in Massachusetts. An 1842 Brown University graduate, he traveled extensively in Europe, spending about two years in the universities of Gottingen, Bonn, and Berlin. On his return in 1855 he was appointed professor of the Greek language and literature in Brown, which chair he still held at the time of publication.
