Set against the incredibly well-rendered, colorful backdrop of British Malaysia in the late eighteen-hundreds, this tale of dragons, ghosts and men is about Li Lan, the eighteen year-old motherless daughter of a once upper class but now but bankrupt family. With her father addicted to opium, her future looks grim and there are no prospective husbands in sight. That is, until she is invited to the home of the rich and powerful Lim family and the lady of the house asks her to become the
... ghost bride of her son, who recently died under suspect conditions. Should Li Lan agree and save her family, even if the educated cousin of the dead heir seems much more attractive than a disgruntled spirit husband? Soon the boundaries between superstition and reality crumble away and Li Lan realizes there is much she doesn't know, both in this world and that of the dead.

As many have already said, the book started out very promising. A young woman navigating the world with cultural and familial pressures and restrictions vs her own dreams and desires. I was further interested when the book dives into the spirit world. I have a deep appreciation for folk tales, myths, etc, and this turn of events was a wonderful way to integrate the spirit world with the mortal world. Then, the book just started wandering. Constant wandering. At one point she is led through a wrong door and she spends a week or two riding a horse back home. I almost lost it right there. I'm not even sure what happened to the plot. There is a murder to solve, but the reader does not "like" the murder victim and we did not really know the 2 suspects. So, the main character wanders around, literally "asking" people if they murdered this guy. Who cares? Other people are manipulating the judgement process of the spirit world, but we have no idea what happens to them. A character simply says, "they were taken care of." What? I spent how many chapters wandering (I mean "chasing") after these bad guys, but there is no resolution? We just have to take someone's word they were caught and dealt with by "the authorities"?The end was laughable. The main character just simply decides what to do with her life. You know the old adage "show don't tell", well, that doesn't happen here. She just decides on the last page what to do. Now, she should have some tough repercussions because of her decision, but luckily in the last few pages a rich guy basically says, "hey don't worry about anything." So, instead of this young woman making a gut-wrenching decision, some old dude with money makes all her problems go away. Ugh.

I want to read a continuation from Er Langs point of view..or a start of her new journey with Er Lang.

I think if you written a longer paragraph many more people would like to read it but I would say it is a nice story.

Fantastic. Brings you into an unearthly world, brightened by the sparks of wit between the protagonists.
