When I picked this book, I was not aware that it was a sequal, nor at any stage I had a feeling, that there was a prior story or a book.I loved the idea of two stories in one, and the fact that one took place in the past, and the other at present. I do have to admit, that I found Anna's story much more interesting. She was a well developmed character, whom we watched grow from a young girl to a very strong, intependent lady. Her journey was very complex, but happy with a brillia
...nt well deserved ending. It was good to see her being true to her beliefs and family. She was surrounded by interesting family members and friends, and I loved getting to know them better and watching the story unfold. The historical background was a very big bonus. Overall European history is very complex and it is great to learn more about a specific period in time. Nicola on the other hand was a bit wishy washy, but Rob added a lot to their story, helping Nicola realise that her talent is a real gift, that she can use to help others. The descriptions of St Petersburg (past & present) were fascinating. Overall I have enjoyed this book very much. It made me smile, and it made me cry, and it made me realise (not for the first time) how beautiful and complex our history is.

Book Riot's '15 Read Harder Challenge Task 13: Romance NovelI was surprised by how much I liked this novel, given as I don't usually go for Romance, though admittedly this one is a history, light fantasy hybrid. It was lovely, however. All the characters, especially Anna, were vividly drawn and extremely likable. I think my favorite thing about the novel was the obvious affection the author herself had for her characters. There was a very pleasing sense of compassion and, for the historical characters especially, a lingering wistfulness embedded in the writing that promised whatever difficulties the characters may endure, it would all come right in the end.
