NPR said this book could be the next Harry Potter, but it has more in common with Twilight than anything. Where J.K. Rowling is a master of foreshadowing, Samantha Shannon uses deus ex machina to get her characters out of tight corners. Her alternate history/futuristic world is contrived, vague, and generally confusing. If you still want to read this book, here's an excerpt: "The aether has made its mark on both of us. It has recognized our tendency to protect one another, and now we ar
...e sworn to protect each other always. We are bound together by a golden cord." And thus begins the romance of a human and a weird immortal creature (and yes, it means a magical golden cord--it's not a metaphor). Do yourself a favor and don't inflict this book on yourself.

What did I think?WHAT DID I THINK?I've never cried so much before, but this book mocks me. In the first place, I was like "What on earth is...clairvoyant? I give up." unless that I did not heh. The book is unputdownable, even when I didn't read it, I thought about it.It all started with Paige Mahoney, the girl I would turn gay for. She's not another typical badass heroine. She's badass, of course, but not in the way another heroines are. She can fight and she can control her power because of those make-sense reasons, such as years of training, suffering. I love Paige so much just like I love Penryn (which all the world know how deep my love for her is) and I doubt it will change.I can't explain everything I love from this book because it will take a plenty of time and it will bring back my memory about...the cruel ending. And if you are looking for badass fictional male character, dude, this book has everything. I love every inch and every word of this book. Thank you, I'm marrying Samantha Shannon.

This book is a wonderfully confusing tale that'll have you stepping out of your world and into the life of Samantha Shannon's titular character. It weaves a story that u only wish was true about a reality that has long since past. If you like stories lihe this then I suggest trying book like The Hunger Games series and books like Invisible by Dawn Metcalf or Spider's Web by N.M. Browne
