bobbib says: Our main character, Charlotte, covers all the bases for a great leading lady in a fantasy novel: Born in the Weird, while not of noble birth she had a major healing talent that allowed her to learn healing, serve the realm and become a noblewoman in her own right. Her life falls apart when she cant conceive and her husband divorces her. Her response is to uproot herself to the Edge and leave her past behind.Enter our leading man, originally from the edge but adopted into the realms o...f the Weird, in chase of the same slavers that wrecked Charlotte's rebuilt life. Both leading characters, secondary players and the situations are remarkably well developed and conceived. I loved the depth and complexity of the plots (there are several, interconnected) and the well developed motivations of the characters. I can't say how much I enjoyed the fact that both the male and female characters are convincing to their own characters and genders. Very few books successfully manage to field this many different characters, both male and female convincingly. Go Ilona Andrews! This is more of a fantasy novel than a romance in my opinion, there is a romance (an extremely convincing and believable one as it happens) and you do see it coming right away, but the plot is good enough in it's own right that this novel should appeal to people who are not entirely about the romance. Oshii says: I really liked Charlotte. Team Andrews can write a great heroine. She was so developed and complicated, interesting and sympathetic, the only downside really was Richard felt somewhat less, even though he's the charcater we know form previous books in the series. Loved the adventure, the details of Charlotte's abilities and magic, Richard's swordsman skills, the growth of George and Jack. I'd love to read their stories, esp as it seems there's a set up with George and Sophie? Great world and details. so hope we haven't seen the last of the Edge.MoreLessRead More Read Less
