David says: I've always been interested by what draws in people to these newer religions. I never quite understood, because, on the outside with several decades worth of history on the topic at your disposal, it's an obvious scam and can't the adherents see that too? Are they willfully blind or just dumb? It's like when you read about financial scams in the paper, with all the details laid out before you, it's an obvious scam, so then what draws in the scamees? The answer is that obviously someth...ing initially draws people to Scientology, just like people are initially drawn into other religions and nobody tells a new initiate all the deeper and sillier beliefs right off the bat, those revelations come after you're already deep down the rabbit hole. Wright does a pretty bang-up job explaining the whys of how individuals get involved with Scientology while providing relevant background info on the context and key players. Nana says: There's a a lot of information in this book. A LOT. It wasn't until I watched the HBO documentary that I was able to get a handle on who everyone was and their role in the church. I found the book to be much more manageable after seeing the documentary. If you want to know everything there is to know about the Church of Scientology, you'll like the book. If you're looking for the cliff note version, watch the documentary. Either way, I will never again attend a Tom Cruise movie.MoreLessRead More Read Less
