1Q84 was my first dealing with Haruki Murakami and I can honestly say I loved the work – so much so that I’m unsure which of his books to pick up next. The fact that it is translated shouldn’t put you off as you really cannot tell that such is the case: it’s beautifully written, keeping you entertained from the start until the end.

The story itself is one that you need to read one after the other. Book one introduces us to this strange parallel world, book two throws us in deeper and we start t

...

o unravel the mystery, and book three answers all our questions and pulls everything together. It is not something that you can understand simply by reading just one of the books: you need to jump into the entire world and enjoy the whole thing.

Throughout the books, we’re told the stories of two interesting characters, both of which are involved with this parallel world in separate yet intertwining ways. Of course, to explain such a thing to you would be to ruin the story. At some points, I found myself somewhat confused, questioning who was where and what was truly happening, yet such a thing works out well in the end – with no questions left unanswered. Moreover the ending itself has me longing for more – not just more of Haruki Murakami’s work but more of the characters and their story as it’s left in such a way that it has me questioning – and hoping – whether there actually could be more to come.

I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is familiar with his work or someone who is thinking of jumping into the work of Haruki Murakami as this really is a brilliant piece, and if word is to be believed his other work will also be great – something I plan to find out as soon as possible!

So boring. Starts with flashes of muted promise and then the authors kill it completely by chapter 2. In talking about an author who could not write... this author has created his own demise.

It was an unadulterated joy.The end was so sudden. No doubt all the good things end.But should it be so abrupt and unexpected.

I waited to get this for weeks from the library on my kindle. The new Karen Slaughter book came in the next day so I read that one first. And I was reading, reading 1Q84 and see that I am only 13% done. How long is this book? 928 pages. Then my kindle died and I had to load it onto the old one. I figure I put about 20+ hours into this.

It is written by a Japanese author, which is a different style for many American readers. I liked that there were a lot of musical references. So, without meaning to sound like an Amazon ad--I was able to yell to Alexa to play whatever musician was in the background of whatever a specific character was doing. That was fun.

There were certain phrasings that I had not come across before. Ex. if you don't understand it now, you wouldn't understand it with an explanation either. Lots of really good little pieces in the novel that were like finding treasures.

The characters were well developed, the pace was good. The story line was solid.

Lots of little similarities to everyone's life. Tell me you didn't think about Jehova's Witnessses or that the prayer Aomame quoted wasn't a hair's breadth from the pre-Vatican II table grace. Most of us probably have had those Talking Head's Once in a Lifetime moments.

I have to admit that I was very glad the story did not fall flat around page 900. Don't you hate when that happens?

I loved it. It was an excellent book. I now need to have a hard cover to add to my library. Not much better in life than having a really great book.

One of the worst books I have ever read. Extremely boring, confused, extremely anticlimactic. Kept thinking it would get better.

LOVE this book! The way it's written is handled with tender love and care. It is poetically descriptive and makes you feel like you are there with the characters. Beautiful book!
